CBS 11/Cavender’s Contest Winners Enjoy ACM Awards

ARLINGTON (CBS 11 NEWS) – Pam and Mike Philley aren’t fancy folks. Not usually.

“It’s difficult with our four kids,” says Mike.

Mike is a Plano police officer.

Pam works for Plano 911.

Sunday, the hard-working high school sweethearts checked into the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas and caught a chauffeured ride to the ACM Awards.

They even got a $1,000 gift card to Cavender’s, spending it Friday on outfits for the big event.

“I was blown away. I couldn’t believe I’d won all that,” said Mike.

The grand prize winners in a CBS11/Cavender’s ticket give-away almost missed out on it all.

It was their youngest daughter, 15 year old Mary, who signed them up to win tickets for the show.

But, being a police family, well…

“Everything is suspicious,” said Mike.

That includes calls from CBS11, trying to let them know they’d won!

“She was leary about it because it was an unknown number,” said Pam.

It took several days and several calls before Mike called the “suspicious” number back, just in time to claim the prize.

“It’s just been a whirlwind ever since,” said Mike.

Even their daughters made it to the show, making it a family night to go down in history.

Dallas Residents Return To Oklahoma City To Remember Federal Building Bombing

OKLAHOMA CITY (CBSDFW.COM) – CBS 11’s Steve Pickett was born and raised in Oklahoma City and returned to his hometown Sunday, to remember lives lost one devastating day.

Christi Jenkins lived two blocks from the house I called home in Oklahoma City.

Sunday her sister Tracie made the same trip I made from Dallas to attend the same gathering.

“I received a call about an explosion and my sister was in the building,” recalls Tracie.

The people returning to the site of the former federal building in Oklahoma City are all connected. They may be families, neighbors, coworkers but they are Oklahomans tied by terror.

A plot to target the U.S Government killed 168 of its men, women and children.

The explosion that ripped apart the Murrah Federal Building on April 19th 1995 became known as the Oklahoma City Bombing…America’s deadliest domestic act of terrorism, until 9-11.

Calvin and Peola Battle died in the building together. I’ve known their daughters since our teenage years.

“The 20th anniversary it just came too fast, just like April 19th came too fast,” says LaDonna Battle who’s parents were killed in the bombing. “You turn back the clock 20 years ago, we were in our darkest hour.”

Sunday’s 20th year remembrance spoke not just of yesterday’s pain, but a community’s perseverance.

How this city fought through the despair that terror brings.

“For 20 years you’ve honored your loved ones, inspired us with renewal, and reminded us that we should all live by the Oklahoma standard,” says Former President Bill Clinton, who was in office during this incident.

Oklahoma City now shines in a light of growth, instead of a day of darkness. They can’t forget what to happen to them, but instead deciding a bombing, should no longer define them.

Outgoing Mayor Randall Ramsey told the station the cops gave no notice and were joined by the city attorney, clerk and water treatment supervisor.

They cited “safety concerns” in their resignation letters, according to Ramsey.

Byrd, who had previously worked as the city’s clerk, has declined to comment about the rash of walk outs but said she wasn’t able to find the letters.

Dumb Polock David Kapuscinski dies after being tasered by police - He previously had a reality TV run in

Dumb Polock David Kapuscinski had big muscles but a small brain and penis....

GIBRALTAR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Gibraltar police say they gave David Kapuscinski an order and he would not comply.

Officers say he was attacking his girlfriend in front of them but she says that is not the whole story.

She says a video of Kapuscinski having an outburst at American Jewelry and Loan on "Hardcore Pawn" was not all that it seems.

The head thumping, bicep flexing man seen in a YouTube video of Tru TV's Hardcore Pawn is the same man who died after being tasered by Gibraltar police

"The male subject failed to comply with verbal orders," said Police Chief Larry Williams. "He was tasered."

Williams says officers arrived at the Gibraltar Shore Apartments in response to a 911 call only to find David Kapuscinski assaulting his girlfriend.

The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

FOX 2 spoke with the woman police say Kapuscinski was attacking.

FOX 2: "So they tasered David twice?"

She refused to open the door when we showed up at her apartment and did not want her face shown on camera or her name used in this story.

She says the trouble started when she woke Kapuscinski up from a nightmare.

FOX 2: "You just woke him up from a bad dream and had somewhat of a nervous breakdown am I correct?"

FOX 2: "So he had a nervous breakdown but he did not assault you?"

She says Kapuscinski was a loving boyfriend, her children adored him, and he made it possible for her to go back to college.

The couple had been together six months and he was a model boyfriend and her children "loved the guy" and that there were no past incidents of domestic violence.

As for this video of him failing to intimidate Seth Gold on Hardcore Pawn, she says it was a set up, a joke and not real at all.

Michigan State Police are investigating what happened and their findings will be turned over the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Service Held To Mark 20 Years Since Oklahoma City Bombing

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — About 1,000 people gathered Sunday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, which was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil until the Sept. 11 attacks six years later.

Former President Bill Clinton and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin were among those who spoke at Sunday’s service at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, where the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building once stood.

The service started with a 168-second moment of silence to honor each of the 168 people who died in the April 19, 1995, attack. It concluded about 90 minutes later with survivors and tearful relatives of the dead reading the names of those killed.

“This was a place of unspeakable horror and tragedy,” said Frank Keating, who completed his first 100 days as Oklahoma’s governor the day before the attack. “How some evil individual would do what he did … is unforgiveable and absolutely unimaginable.”

“The agony was consistent. The agony appeared never to end,” Keating said.

FBI Director James Comey and others paid tribute to those who took part in the recovery efforts.

“In an instant, this day was transformed into a moment of history, a moment of unspeakable horror and darkness,” Comey said. “It is not the moment that defines us. It is not the act itself that shapes our destiny. It is what comes next.”

After the service, LaDonna Battle and her family were standing between two of the 168 metal and glass chairs that now stand as a testament to those who were killed. The two chairs were inscribed with the names of her parents, Calvin and Peola Battle, who were arranging to receive Social Security benefits when the bomb detonated.

“We’re completing a journey with steel hearts. We’re rebuilding our lives.” LaDonna Battle said.

Timothy McVeigh, an Army veteran with strong anti-government views, planned the bombing as revenge for the deadly standoff between the FBI and Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, that killed more than 70 people on April 19, 1993 — exactly two years earlier.

McVeigh was convicted on federal murder and conspiracy charges in 1997 and executed in 2001.

His Army buddy, Terry Nichols, was convicted on federal and state bombing-related charges and is serving multiple life sentences in a federal prison.

California Implements Statewide Ban On All .45 ACP Ammunition

The California Legislature has passed a controversial Assembly Bill that creates a ban on the future sale and ownership of all .45 ACP ammo. The bill states that the ban on the popular ammunition is in effect immediately, however does include a 60 day grace period prior to state law enforcement enforcing the ban.

Though the ban has created a clear divide among the citizens of California, it’s said to be widely supported by political figures across the state. Many politicians and citizens alike feel that that ban is a clear infringement of California citizen’s second amendment rights, however; many feel that the ban is a positive step towards much needed gun control.
