The off-duty Rosemont police officer who shot and killed his brother-in-law following a domestic dispute and a head-on car crash said he "had to do it" because the man had threatened to kill him, police said.
Police reports stated that Officer Rick Drehobl "appeared to be hysterical" right after the shooting, sitting curled in a fetal position on a sidewalk crying and said, "I had to do it."
Drehobl fatally shot his sister's husband, Joseph Caffarello, on Jan. 7 after an altercation between the men at the Caffarello home. On April 1, the Cook County state's attorney's office announced that after an investigation by Illinois State Police, prosecutors decided there was "insufficient evidence" to charge Drehobl with a crime.
